Rockford has a growing Critical Mass ride. While there’s not a great turnout every month, there have been some summer rides that pack the streets.
For those who are unfamiliar, Critical Mass rides take place monthly, typically on the last Friday of the month. In Rockford, we meet at the sand volleyball courts next to the Rock River Rec Path by the downtown YMCA. Riders take to the streets of Rockford, often times taking over a lane.
While some interpret the ride as a protest, it serves as a powerful tool to raise cycling awareness. Traveling in a group allows cyclists to ride on main city streets with less risk (they can’t hit us all!).
This month’s ride is unusual. Usually, the ride is at 6 p.m. This month, a night ride was planned. Cyclists will meet at the volleyball courts around 9:30 p.m. and the ride starts around 9:45 p.m.
Let’s up the number of riders and flood Rockford with bikes. You can check out the event page on Facebook.
